Towana Deann Wright is the St. Elmos Daughter from Mobile Alabama where she was born. The rich, artistic culture of the South and the world is her canvas. She picked up her brush during the Pandemic at home in Chelsea Massachusetts where she began to paint tributes to the “invisible, ” Black woman.
"The first thing that hits you is color - Towana Wright’s use of color is clearly inspired - the colors practically jump out at you, inviting you to become a part of the swirl of movement and energy that is present in all of her work."
"The second is humor - many of her pieces put a smile on my face, even if I’m not always in on the joke - Towana’s wit shines through on her canvases. This woman has imagination to spare! Reminiscent of the folk art of Atlanta’s Panorama Ray and also distinctly her own. "
"Towana’s art is informed by the American South of her childhood which lives on in her dreams and imagination. I have been fortunate to have Towana as a colleague at work for many years, and I had no idea how much talent was hidden just a few cubicles away from mine. "
Towana is a self-taught visual artist and flash-fiction writer with an extraordinary background. Her parents, Lionel and Carol, moved from their Southern roots to Massachusetts where she grew up with her sister Angela. Pursuing a life-long dream, Towana graduated in 2015 with an MFA in Creative Writing and participated in many prestigious writing workshops and residencies, including one at Oxford University, in London, England.
